In an upcoming NFL Network documentary called “America’s Game: 2022 Kansas City Chiefs,” two-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes reflects on his team’s Super Bowl LVII triumph and how a previous loss became a source of motivation. The Chiefs’ second Super Bowl win in four years had a catalyst: a painful 31-9 defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2021 Super Bowl, led by the mythical Tom Brady.

The film captures the moment of reckoning for Mahomes, who found himself outclassed by Brady and the Buc’s defense during that crucial game. Brady demonstrated his seven-time Super Bowl champion pedigree with a 21-for-29 performance, accumulating 195 passing yards and scoring three touchdowns. In contrast, Mahomes ended up with 49 pass attempts but only 26 completions. He managed to log 270 passing yards but scored no touchdowns and threw two interceptions. A big testament to Todd Bowles’ defense.

Mahomes shared lessons he learned from that disheartening experience in the documentary, saying,

People saw all of the cool scrambles where I was trying to scramble around, throw these huge touchdowns, and [make] these plays, and they weren’t working. I’ve learned now that you can’t always be Superman; sometimes you have to rely on your teammates to make plays happen for you. I’ll always be haunted by Super Bowl LV.

The documentary, which will be released on September 6th, just a day before the Chiefs square off against the Detroit Lions in the season opener, features narration by actor and devoted Chiefs fan Paul Rudd. Alongside Mahomes, star tight end Travis Kelce and defensive tackle Chris Jones also participated in in-depth interviews.

In a coincidental turn of events, another documentary focusing on the Chiefs, “Time’s Yours 2: The 2022 Kansas City Chiefs,” will also premiere the same night. This film will offer a unique perspective on the Chiefs’ recent championship victory, focusing on the insights of the coaching staff.
