We’re in the heart of the NFL offseason, which means players are forbidden from working out with one another at team facilities.
So it’s become common practice for quarterbacks to arrange off-site workouts with their skill position players. Defending NFL and Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes did just that this week, throwing with a group of Kansas City Chiefs pass-catchers on TCU’s campus.
The group, which included Chiefs wideouts Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Skyy Moore, had a surprising visitor: San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance.
According to John Breech of CBS Sports, Lance “crashed” the workout and threw passes to the Chiefs receivers. That’s where the now-viral video of his new and improved throwing motion originated.
Presumably, Mahomes invited Lance to get a little extra work in.
While it’s somewhat unusual to see quarterbacks from two NFL teams at the same throwing session, especially considering the Chiefs met the 49ers in the Super Bowl in 2019 and nearly again last season, Lance should be eager for the reps. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, saw his 2022 season end in Week Two due to a broken ankle. The video of him passing marked the first time he’s thrown publicly since suffering the injury.
Lance will compete with Brock Purdy (once he recovers from his recent surgery to repair the torn UCL in his throwing elbow) and Sam Darnold for the 49ers starting job behind center.
